Winter arrives early in Hokkaido, Japan as Record 1.5+ Feet of Snow buries Rusutsu and Niseko

Several Hokkaido ski resorts have woken to a record layer of fresh snow this morning (Tues, Nov 10), with a report of 1.54 feet (47 cm) from Rusutsu–a village located in Shiribeshi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan.

In addition to Rusutsu, nearby Niseko received close to 50cm (1.6 feet) in the last 24 hours alone.

According to local website 360niseko.com, the snow was “unbelievable” and a “heroic dump” with much more falling higher up the mountain.

“The snowfall has been relentless,” continues the 360niseko.com article.

“The scene is amazing with heavy snow coating everything.”

According to Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) data for Kutchan (which is Niseko’s closest town), and as reported by skiasia.com, this was the region’s earliest November snowfall in 4 years. However, yesterday’s totals weren’t merely a few accumulating flakes, they were a “heroic dump” and likely broke much older records–though good luck deciphering the JMA data to find out exactly how old.

Earlier this year, the JMA reported an 80% chance of below average snowfall for Hokkaido this season, despite the presence of La Niña, which has historically only bolstered Japan’s snow season. Yet again, we have a mainstream weather/climate institution proven catastrophically wrong by real world observations–try writing AGW out of your models, and then run them again for a more accurate result.

Hokkaido’s heavy snow is expected to continue Tuesday evening through Wednesday, adding to this week’s already record-breaking totals.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.

Prepare accordingly— learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.
