Many cotton farmers in Willacy County, TX are starting off their harvest season knowing they won’t make a profit. Drought early on in the season followed by torrential rains in June have devastated the fields.
One local farmer, Spence Pennington, says he is only able to harvest about 15 percent of his crop.
Pennington says that most of Willacy’s cotton farmers are in the same boat, and calls the situation an economic disaster for the county.
Farmers will be turning to crop insurance programs to make up for the loss.
