Winter wheat plantings have fallen behind last year’s progress, with quality also losing ground as the percentage of plantings rated as good or excellent slipped back by two percentage points to 51%.
That was behind most analysts’ estimates, with on average most expecting good to excellent ratings on 54% of the crop.
Plantings are at 84%, six percentage points behind the same stage of 2017.
Wheat emerged on 70% of the planted area, versus the five-year average of 77%.
