Unrelenting Snow Brings Chaos to Northern India — Kills at least 7

48 hours of unrelenting snow across Northern India has killed at least seven, caused untold traffic chaos, cut the power to tens-of-thousands, and triggered multiple deadly avalanches.

This season’s first heavy snowfall began on Wednesday night, and ran right through until Friday.

Deep accumulations brought ALL of the regions major highways to a complete standstill, stranding 2,000+ vehicles. The falls also reportedly grounded hundreds of flights at Srinagar airport.

Districts such as Kupwara, Shopian, Ganderbal, and Baramulla recorded up to 1.2 m (4 feet) of snow.

The bodies of two soldiers were recovered on Thursday after an avalanche struck in Kupwara, and a further two soldiers were killed in Kupwara after crashing their vehicle in blizzard conditions.

An employee of India’s Power Development Department died after falling from an electric pole while attempting to restore power. A civilian was killed in Srinagar city after being hit by a tree branch. And in Pulwama city, a man died clearing snow from a roof.

Hundreds of homes were damaged by the heavy snowfall, while thousands more are still without power — the snowstorms brought “a total power outage” to the entire Kashmir valley.

“Snow has damaged the electric power infrastructure in the valley,” said Chief Engineer Qazi Hafhmat of the Power Development Department. “Power lines have been downed by tree branches. We would require 3-4 hours after snow stops to restore the power supply.”

Hospitals have had to postpone all operations as a result, while schools and universities have moved lessons to next week.

Last week’s disruptive cold and snow was wide-reaching, too — regions some 410 miles (660km) south of Kashmir Valley were reporting similar levels of chaos, in the state of Himachal Pradesh:

The cold times are returning in line with historically low solar activity.

NASA has revealed this upcoming solar cycle (25) will be “the weakest of the past 200 years,” and they’ve correlated previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
