A massive eruption just popped off at Ulawun today, June 26 — it’s largest explosion since 2000. The stratovolcano is located in New Great Britain, Papua New Guinea along the Bismarck volcanic arc.
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin is warning of a thick ash column rising to at least 50,000 feet (15.2 km) a.s.l., and comfortably into the stratosphere.
Particulates ejected to altitudes above 32,800 feet (10 km) have a direct cooling effect on the planet.
The Aviation Colour Code has been raised to Red.
The volcano, located on the remote Bismarck Archipelago, is listed as one of 16 “Decade Volcanoes” targeted for research because they pose a significant risk of large, violent eruptions.
This eruption was somewhat sudden, although an alert did manage to get out in time, and evacuations have been taking place all day.
“The sky has turned black,” said Kingsly Quou, the manager of the nearby Mavo Estates, a palm plantation, adding that villagers had already been evacuated from the foot of the volcano.
Ulawun, also known locally as the “Father” is a symmetrical large stratovolcano on New Britain Island.
It is one Papua New Guinea’s most active and most dangerous volcanoes. And rising to 2334 m, it’s also the highest of the 1000 km long chain of the Bismarck volcanic arc which stretches from Rabaul volcano in the East to Wewak in the west and contains no less than 21 active volcanoes.
The “Father” has a busy eruptive history, peppered with VEI 2s and 3s — it’s largest confirmed explosion began on Sept 28, 2000 and last for around a month, eventually registering as a 4 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, according to www.volcano.si.edu.
