Thundersnow Rattles the UK as the Mercury Plunges to -9.6C (14.7F)

Police Scotland has had to reassure residents in Edinburgh after hundreds of reports of ‘explosions’ and ‘sonic booms’ clogged their switchboards.

Two “extraordinarily loud” claps of thunder were heard over the Scottish capital just before 05:00, and authorities were quick to reassure people that the strange noises were due to a phenomenon called thundersnow following a number of concerned residents saying it “sounded like bombs going off.”

Thundersnow, although rare in these parts, is simply the addition of thunder and lightning to a heavy snowstorm.

Friday morning’s heavy snow was accompanied by bone-chilling cold — temperatures plummeted to -9.6C (14.7F) in Altnaharra, the Highlands in the wee hours, an exceptionally low reading for early-December.

The extreme wintry weather has also caused disruption across many areas, including the closure of the Queensferry Crossing. In addition, more than a dozen schools have been closed in the Highlands and Moray, including Gore Glen Primary School:

Looking forward, there’s much more wintry fun where that came from.

Heavy snow will persist Friday and Saturday across Scotland and northern England, and it threatens regions much further south, too, including London:

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow.

Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.
