Surprise Spring Snow for the Kanto region of Japan, with more on the way

Parts of the Kanto region of Japan were plunged into snowy midwinter conditions on April 10 due to a combination of unseasonably cold air and low atmospheric pressure, reads the opening paragraph of a recent mainichi.jp article.

Snowfall of 3cm (1.2 inches) was observed north of the capital in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and to the west of Tokyo in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Snow also shocked the residents of Ome on Wednesday, as it fell among blossoming cherry trees:

Moving ahead through the week, the areas forecast to receive the most snowfall include the southern Gunma Prefecture and the northern Tochigi Prefecture where as much as 20cm (7.9 inches) is expected, with Yamanashi Prefecture predicted to be close behind at 15cm (5.9 inches).
