Spain registered its coldest temperature in recorded history on Wednesday, January 6 with the Catalan Pyrenees logging a bone-chilling -34.1C (-29.3F).
Yesterday’s reading busted the all-time low temperature record for the Iberian Peninsula–which also includes Portugal. The record had stood since February 2, 1956 (solar minimum of cycle 18) when a reading of -32C (-25.6F) was observed in Estany-Gento, located in the province of Lleida.
The new record was provided by the Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu, and has been confirmed by AEMET.
“The cold air from the sides of mountains was pulled down by gravity and accumulated in lower levels,” explained meteorologist Sergi Gonzalez on Twitter.
Spain is bracing for yet more record-breaking Arctic weather this week.
From Wednesday until Sunday, the country’s meteorological agency has issued warnings for snow, further freezing temperatures and strong winds.
This week in the interior of the Peninsula, “copious snowfalls are expected at low levels,” reports 20minutos.es: even the nation’s capital Madrid is expecting historic snow beginning Thursday, and officials are preparing the city for the rare event.
Stay tuned for updates.
Also, the observed global uptick in record cold events cannot be brushed-off as “weather”. It is instead an indication of a changing climate, a sign that the next great cooling epoch is dawning: climate is cyclic, after all, never linear.
The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activity, cloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).
Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.
