South American Uptick: Nevado del Ruiz Shoots Ash to 27,000 Feet — Reventador to 20,000 Feet

South American volcanoes have been in overdrive recently, venting frequently and violently.

Volcanic activity has been strongly correlated with solar activity.

As our sun continues its descent into this next Grand Solar Minimum, the associated influx of Cosmic Rays should only further excite the silica-rich magma stored deep within volcanic chambers — the upshot being increased eruptions, both in number and power.

Ejected particulates have a direct cooling affect on the planet — particularly those fired above 32,800 feet (10km) and into the stratosphere.

Nevado del Ruiz

Central Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz is well and truly awake.

After a long period of inactivity, the deadly stratovolcano stirred on April 16 and has seen an almost daily uptick in ash emissions since then, culminating in April 26’s powerful eruption to 27,000 feet (8,200 m), or flight level 270 — the largest eruption in years.

The volcano has an eruptive history peppered with confirmed VEI 2 and 3 eruptions.

Though none come close to the death and destruction caused by the VEI 3 beginning in 1985:

That eruption melted a portion of a glacier sitting atop the mountain which resulted in a rampaging lahar (mud flow) rolling into nearby towns and villages, ultimately killing 25,000 — most residing in the town of Armero. The event marked one of the worst volcanic disasters in history.


Explosive activity is also underway at Reventador, a 3562 m high stratovolcano located just 800km SW of Nevado del Ruiz, in Ecuador.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned of a volcanic ash plume rising to an estimated 20,000 feet (6,100 m), or flight level 200.

Reventador’s typical eruption style is explosive and effusive.

Seismic and Volcanic activity has been correlated to changes in our sun.

The recent global uptick in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
