Semeru Volcano Explodes to 50,000 feet (15.2 km)

These past few days have seen a violent worldwide volcanic uptick.

The first high-level –and potentially stratospheric– eruption of the week occurred at Lewotolo at 01:50 UTC on November 29 (article linked below).

Located on Lembata Island, Indonesia, Lewotolo is a perfectly symmetrical stratovolcano standing at 4,669 ft (1,423 m) tall.

Sunday’s blast fired a dense and dark ash plume to approximately 50,000 feet (15.2 km), and was the volcano’s first notable eruption since 2012.

The impressive ash cloud produced by Lewotolo was matched by that of Semeru volcano just a day later, on Monday, November 30.

As with Lewotolo, the ash ejected by Semeru was dense and dark and reached an altitude of 50,000 ft (15.2 km)–confirmed by both HIMAWARI-8 and the VAAC Darwin.

This latest eruption comes after the confirmed VEI 3 from earlier in the year (volcano.si.edu)–an eruptive episode that went down as the volcano’s largest since at least 1967, perhaps even 1911.


The effusive-explosive eruption continued at very elevated levels into Tuesday and Wednesday, and, according to the Semeru volcano observatory of Indonesia’s volcano monitoring agency (PVMBG), fast-moving pyroclastic flows have also been reported.

As a result, around 550 people fled their homes on Indonesia’s main Java Island, according to the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency, with 300 fleeing to an observation post, while the rest stayed at shelters located in Supiturang village. “There are several urgent needs,” said agency spokesperson Raditya Jati, “such as ready-to-eat foods, public kitchens, and masks.”



Volcanic eruptions are one of the key forcings driving Earth into its next bout of global cooling, with their worldwide uptick tied to solar activity, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the influx of Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
