Record Snowfall Delays Hundreds of Flights at SLC Airport, Utah

“When you have the snow coming down this fast, this hard, it really is a challenge,” said Salt Lake City International Airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer to FOX 13. “We knew this storm was coming, so we all had our eyes on it, and sure enough, it delivered.”

A total of 8.6 inches (21.8 cm) of snow fell at the airport on Mon, Feb. 04, delaying 300+ flights and busting the previous record of 7 inches (17.8 cm) set way back in 1936 (solar minimum of cycle 16), according to National Weather Service data.

As of 7:45 PM, Utah Highway Patrol troopers had investigated 313 crashes statewide since midnight — most of these were in Salt Lake County. One crash resulted in a power outage that impacted almost 3,000 customers in the South Salt Lake and Sugar House area, according to Rocky Mountain Power.

SLC airport will hold a debriefing meeting to discuss their execution of the recent winter weather event.

“We will look at what happened today, see if there’s any adjustments that we can make so next time we have a storm of this magnitude we’ll be better prepared,” Volmer said.

And while this winter storm will have abated by Tuesday, another powerful system is expected to blast the Western U.S. this Wednesday through Sunday…

…with something potentially monstrous in store next week, as a meridional jet stream flow (associated with low solar activity) AGAIN “unlocks” a continent-wide mass of brutal Arctic air from the polar regions, and delivers it, this time, to practically ALL of North America:

This is a development worth keeping a very close eye-on.

The lower latitudes are refreezing in line with historically low solar activity:
