Record Cold in the Mesosphere sends Rare Noctilucent Clouds (NLCs) as far south as London, England

It’s getting cold in the mesosphere,” writes Dr Tony Philips over at spaceweather.com. So cold in fact that it’s causing noctilucent clouds (NLCs) to spill out of the Arctic to the mid-latitudes.

Lynn Harvey of the University of Colorado Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics backs up the doctor’s claim: “Temperatures are very cold. At polar latitudes (60N-80N) temperatures have been breaking 14-year records in the last few days.

“In fact, mid-latitude (35N-55N) temperatures in late May (DOY 142-148) were the coldest of the AIM record”–since 2007 when NASA’s AIM spacecraft began monitoring noctilucent clouds).

Phil Halpert from London, England, noticed a few electric-blue ripples over the rooftops on June 7:

He rushed out to a local park and caught this rare scene:

“I’ve been waiting years to see NLCs, and finally it happened!” said Halpert.

“This is the first time I have ever seen noctilucent clouds over London!”

For NLCs to form, extremely cold temperatures –as low as -150F– are required. These night shining clouds are always more prevalent during solar minimum conditions when there is less solar energy heating the extreme upper atmosphere. And with the Sun currently suffering its deepest solar minimum of the past 100+ years, this goes someway to explaining Halpert’s rare London sightings.

The growing, record-breaking chill in the mesosphere suggests this summer could be even better than last year, when NLCs were spotted farther south than ever before; in mid-June 2019, NLCs were observed as far south as Joshua Tree, CA (34 deg. N) and Albuquerque, New Mexico (35 deg. N).

The COLD TIMES are returning, the lower-latitudes are REFREEZING, in line with historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow.

Even NASA agrees, if you read between the lines, with their forecast for this upcoming solar cycle (25) seeing it as “the weakest of the past 200 years,” with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
