As reported by meteo-tv.ru, a powerful snow cyclone lingered over the Sakhalin region of Russia this week, prompting the Ministry of Emergency Situations to issue emergency weather warnings.
The cyclone brought with it heavy snowfall, as well as near-hurricane winds of up to 119 km/h (74 mph) to some parts. The ferry service connecting the Russian mainland with Sakhalin Island was suspended, and thousands of residents were left without power in bone-chilling temperatures.
In the south of the island traffic was blocked by heavy drifts, and many flights were cancelled.
A bus with 45 passengers got stuck in one such snowdrift near the village of Vzmorye — emergency services arrived on the scene but were unable to drag it out. The passengers were evacuated to a nearby school, where they were provided with food and drinks.
According to sakhalin.info, the adverse weather conditions persisted into Friday, March 13: “from 4:20PM traffic was closed for all types of transport on the section of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk-Kholmsk highway”.
Fortunately, the snowstorm looks set to shift north overnight Friday, giving the Sakhalin region some much needed relief; though the snow will continue to fall, and the accumulations will continue to add to the monster Northern Hemisphere Snow Mass Totals so far this season (currently standing at some 500+ gigatons above the 1982-2012 average):

NASA has recently revealed this upcoming solar cycle (25) will be “the weakest of the past 200 years,” with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
