New Caledonia: Sixteen Strong Earthquakes Registered in just Six Hours
A series of strong earthquakes hit near the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia on Tueday Oct 16. The sequence started with a M6.3 registered by the USGS at 00:28 UTC.
The quake was followed by M6.4 (downgraded from M6.8) at 01:03 UTC.
16 quakes were registered in total over a period of just 6 hours, with magnitudes between M4.8 and M5.8 — all struck at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
The quakes did not produce a tsunami.
And there are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).
The recent global seismic and volcanic uptick is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity, coronal holes, and the increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
