NASA’s James Hansen, 1989: “New York City’s West Side Highway will be Underwater by 2009”

NASA climate scientist James Edward Hansen is where all this nonsense started–or at least he’s the one responsible for devising the hokey theory politicians, activists, and political-activists would go on to fall-for/exploit for decades to come.

“The greenhouse effect is here,” pronounced Hansen back on June 23, 1988 during his Congressional testimony on man-made global warming — an announcement that “shook the political establishment,” reported George H. W. Bush, in the middle of a heated presidential campaign, vowed to use the “White House effect” to battle the “greenhouse effect.”

Hansen had told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee there is only a “1 percent chance” that he is wrong in blaming rising temperatures around the world on the buildup of man-made gases in the atmosphere.

A 1 percent chance that he is wrong?

In a field as complex and unknown as Earth’s climate?

When many of his peers and even colleagues at the time were already casting doubt on his assumptions and “leaps”?

Something was off from the very start.

And so to highlight what a soothsayer James Edward Hansen is not, I’ve compiled a few of the man’s ludicrous -and in many cases laughable- predictions below–oh, and I’ve assumed Hansen applied a 99 percent probability to all of his prophesies, because, well, why wouldn’t he of… the man presents all the confidence of one in contact with a divine being.

Hansen, 1989: “New York City’s West Side Highway underwater by 2009”

During an interview in New York City in 1989, Hansen was asked: “If what you’re saying about the greenhouse effect is true, is anything going to look different down there in 20 years?” Hansen reportedly turned to a window overlooking Broadway, and said, “Well, there will be more traffic. The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change.”

Remember, there was only a 1 percent chance Hansen could be wrong.

“Water by Request Only”

Confusingly, Hansen also claimed that by 2019 at the latest New York restaurants would have signs in their windows that read, “Water by request only.” Under the greenhouse effect, extreme weather increases, said Hansen — and depending on where you are in terms of the hydrological cycle, you get more of whatever you’re prone to get. New York can get droughts, the droughts can get more severe and you’ll have signs in restaurants saying “Water by request only.”

This was supposed to have occurred no later than last year, with, again, a 99 percent certainty (we’re getting into some crazy odds).

Hansen, 2008: “The Arctic will be free of summer ice within 5 to 10 years”

Back in 2008, Hansen, who was supposedly stocking up on life-jackets and rowboats in preparation for NYC being underwater the next year, spouted yet another doozy. In an interview with the AP dated June 24, 2008, Hansen said: “We see a tipping point occurring right before out eyes. The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”

That sure is some impressive back-slapping bluster on show, again.

The interview continues, and Hansen makes the claim “that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.” Bold. But once again, proven hopelessly wrong. Hansen had until 2018 for the northern pole’s summer ice to vanish. Instead, that year saw Arctic sea ice volume up 7% from when Hansen made his prophesy, and melting at the slowest rate on record.

I can only assume Hansen got his percentages reversed — in reality, his predictions have proven 99 percent wrong. Moreover, many of his utterances have actually resembled those of a deranged street-corner warbler with an EOTW placard and crucifix tattoos, rather than a scientist. But then again, the man is a self proclaimed “activist-scientists” so should we really expect anything less?

How someone with such a track record of failure has held onto the respect and accolades that James Edward Hansen has I feel is testament to the agenda at play. “Global Warming” is a tool, a politicized weapon, and it will carry on being wielded by the likes of Hansen no matter what the real-world observations say. And, depressingly, an ever-growing line of the poor and ill-informed will continue following that balding Pied Piper into the Hamelin cave, where their self-respect and ability to think-critically will never be seen again.

“There will also be more police cars,” claimed Hansen back in 1989. “Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up.”

I’m sick of the lies. Lies made a thousands times worse by the climatic reality that is actually fast-barreling towards us: the COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING in line with historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow.

Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.

Prepare accordingly— learn the facts, relocate if need be, and grow your own.

  1. Tom Ritchford

The question that Hansen was asked was this: “”When I interviewed James Hansen I asked him to speculate on what the view outside his office window could look like in 40 years with doubled CO2.”

Note that part? “with doubled CO2”? A hypothetical, which Hansen answered correctly?

Curious to see if you keep this comment up!

  2. TRACY

Why is that “carbon taxes” favor the wealthy? Most likely because the wealthy came up with it. They will still have multiple massive mansions, lots of cars yachts and private jets, while the peasants are forced to cut back. Letting billionaires kill the planet because they are wealthy is BS. “Dr” Bill Gates, who is “worried” about the weather…will still have a carbon footprint 1000 times larger than the average peasant. He will pay a penance of a tiny tiny fraction of his wealth and continue to live like a pharaoh with a four 60,000 sq ft mansions and a fleet of private jets, while he wants the peasants to suffer. An EQUITABLE plan would be he gets the same carbon as the average peasant, Thats not how it will work. He wants you living in a pod, taking public transit and eating bugs. While he lives like a King.
