M7.5 Quake Rocks 45km NE of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea

A very strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M7.5 hit near New Britain, Papua New Guinea at 12:58 UTC on May 14. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 44 km (27.3 miles) NE of Kokopo (population 26,273), Papua New Guinea.

Five powerful aftershocks followed ranging from M4.7 to M5.0.

There are approximately 240,000 people living within 100 km (62 miles) of the original quake.

And more than 600,000 people are estimated to have felt shaking.

Hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 1,000 km (620 miles) along the coasts of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, according to NTWC.


Seismic and Volcanic activity has been correlated to changes in our sun.

The recent global uptick in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity, coronal holes, a waning magnetosphere, and the increase in Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
