M6.0 Earthquake Strikes 138km S of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia
A strong earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.0 hit 138km south of Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia at 07:45:14 (UTC) on October 9, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 42km (26 miles).
The epicenter was located 138km (86 miles) north of Severo-Kuril’sk (population 2,422), Sakhalin and 419km (260 miles) NNE of Vilyuchinsk (population 25,204), Kamtsjatka, Russia.
The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
The quake was in the region of the currently erupting Ebeko volcano.
Ebeko’s latest eruption was reported on Monday, Oct 8 when ash was fired over 14,000ft a.s.l.
The recent global seismic and volcanic uptick is likely attributed to the drop-off in solar activity, coronal holes, and the increase in Galactic Cosmic Rays penetrating silica-rich magma.
