By the third week of October, 2020 temperatures started plummeting across many states, including Wyoming, to levels “literally off the charts” in regions such as Jackson.
As reported by Jim Woodmency, chief meteorologist at Mountain Weather who has forecast weather in Jackson Hole for 29 years: on Sunday, Oct. 25, the afternoon high at the Jackson Climate Station read 18F (-7.8C) — a reading that broke the record for the coldest-ever maximum temperature in the month of October. Before that, the coldest October daytime high Jackson had ever seen was the 20F (-6.7C). “And here is the kicker,” writes Woodmency: “That happened last year, on Oct. 29, 2019.”
Following on from Sunday’s high record-low high, in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 26, the mercury at the Jackson Climate Station plunged to a cousin-hugging –9F (-22.8C). That’s colder than it has ever been in October in Jackson. The measurement “was literally off the charts,” writes Woodmency, and it comfortably broke the previous low temperature record of -6F (-21.1C) which had also been established last year, on Oct. 30.
Woodmency says he thought 2019’s records would stand for quite a while — having record-breaking cold temperatures in October two years in a row is something he considers “absolutely astonishing”.
In an effort to contextualize just how cold things have gotten, Woodmency writes: “We bottomed out on Oct. 25 and 26 with high temperatures of 18 and 19 degrees. These are the only two October days in our entire historical weather record with highs in the teens. In comparison, that “old” record cold maximum temperature from last October of 20 degrees had beaten the record prior by 5 degrees, when on Oct. 30, 1991, it dropped to 25 degrees.
“Low temperatures getting down into single digits during the month of October is not that unusual. However, low temperatures dropping below zero in October has happened on only five days in all of Jackson’s recorded weather history, and four out of five of those days occurred in the last two years.”
Woodmency points out that the only other time October temps dropped below zero was on Oct. 29, 1917 (the Centennial Minimum) when the low touched -5F (-20.6C)–a record that stood until last year, which then stood until this year, when it was blown away by another 3F.
Furthermore, and in what we’re led to believe is a linearly warming world on the brink of catastrophe, Jackson, WY suffered its coldest YEAR ever in 2019. And then, in 2020 -adding to the new all-time record low temps documented above- the area also registered its earliest-ever snowfall:
Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.
