Grand Forks Area sees Record-Breaking Low Temps
The Grand Forks area on Friday, Oct 12 saw extremely cold temperatures and record-breaking lows.
Friday morning temps plunged to -12.2C at the Grand Forks Airport, easily breaking the previous record low of -7.2C from 1979, National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling said.
1979 came after relatively weak solar cycle 20.
In the city temps were even colder.
The previous cold record of -12C set in 1919 (end of the Centennial Minimum) was broken as Friday’s low touched -12.8C.
Temperatures hovered around freezing throughout Friday and Saturday.
Ritterling added that snowfall is expected again Saturday night through Sunday morning.
