Further Ambae Eruption Fears As 6M Quake strikes off Vanuatu

An earthquake of magnitude 6 (downgraded to 5.9) struck north of the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

There was no immediate tsunami warning or any reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which hit at a depth of 73 km (47 miles) about 474 km (295 miles) north of Vanuatu’s island of Santo,.

This latest quake comes off the back of a 6.4M on July 13th in the same region, and the eruption of Ambae volcano on 16th.

Officials are preparing to permanently evacuate the entire population of Ambae island as the threat of a big eruption increases.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is rocking.
