Arctic Sea Ice Extent Currently Second-Highest In 15 Years, And Growing…

Arctic sea ice data is in plain view of the world’s media, yet outlets would still rather quote activist-scientists than show an unambiguous chart. Articles of “catastrophic ice melt” still pepper the global news feeds, even as signs point to a cyclical shift in the northern polar region.

I’m being consciously naive here. I’m fully aware that the media’s job isn’t to inform; rather, it exists to propagandize and to push the agendas and narratives of its backers. Still, I can’t help but wonder, when a placard-brandishing climate alarmist yells “the end is nigh!”, who exactly is it that they’ve put their trust in? Who told them that the sky is falling? I ask because you do need to be informed of the ‘climate crisis’ in order to discern it — your own senses aren’t enough. People aren’t opening their front doors in the morning to an ‘existential emergency’, they aren’t retreating back inside, calling their bosses and saying “I wont be coming in today, you know… ’cause of the climate”. This is supposed to be ‘catastrophic global warming‘, remember? Not ‘random, cherry-picked extreme weather events’? For what is billed as a ‘worldly cataclysm’, this warming sure is illusive, periodic and localized.

The power of propaganda, I guess.

The blind acceptance of sheep.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Is Currently The Second-Highest In 15 Years, And Growing

The poster child for AGW is of course the Arctic. For years, dire tipping point deadlines of an “ice free Arctic” have been prophesied by pedestalled climate ‘experts’, and for years, dire tipping point deadlines have uneventfully passed us all by.

See: Decades Of Failed Tipping Point Prophesies

And: Years Of Failed Arctic Sea Ice Predictions

In a further blow to the credibility of the climate ambulance chasers, there is, as of Nov 17, significantly more ice in the Arctic than there has been in recent years — the difference is stark.

This week, Arctic sea ice is approaching 10,000,000 km2 — the second highest ice extent of any of the last 15 years. Furthermore, the years 2008 and 2005 are on course to be eclipsed in the coming days/weeks, as are many from the early-2000s and mid/late-1990s — this means that 2021 will soon claim the title of ‘the highest Arctic sea ice extent of the past two decades’ (since 2001).

In addition, extent is now comfortably above the 2011-2020 average, and, by next week, is expected to have taken out the 2001-2010 average, too, according to NSIDC data.

Also worth noting is that ‘extent’ is actually highly variable and susceptible to changing wind patterns, etc. A more reliable metric to use when trying to determine the health of an ice sheet is its thickness or volume.

According to the latest data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), Arctic sea ice ‘volume’ has been on something of a tear in recent weeks — it is now tracking above all recent years (black line on the below chart), and shows no signs of abating:

Here’s a closer look:

“Cold and snow came early to much of the Arctic this year,” reports woodtv.com. This reality, as hinted at above, is a big shift from recent years, and I believe it could indicate a more permanent ‘trend change’ as low solar activity’s impact on Earth’s climate continues to ‘snowball’.

Only time will tell on that front, but backing up my contention is the fact that the South Pole also just witnessed a historically cold winter. As reported last month: “Between the months of April and September, the South Pole averaged a temperature of -61.1C (-78F). Simply put, this was the region’s coldest 6-month spell ever recorded, and it comfortably usurped the previous coldest ‘coreless winter‘ on record: the -60.6C (-77F) from 1976 (solar minimum of weak cycle 20).”

Unsurprisingly, the mainstream media remains silent on all of this.

It doesn’t fit the narrative, and so it isn’t reported on — this isn’t how journalism (and indeed science) is supposed to work.

In the absence of open debate, questioning and accountability, authoritarian forces rise.

Arctic Owls Spotted In Northwest Spain

In an event thought to be related to the exceptional chill being felt in northern latitudes this autumn, a number of snowy or Arctic owls have been spotted in The Principality of Asturias–a region of northwest Spain.

Biologist Arancha Marcotegi, from Birdwatch Asturias, has confirmed the presence of at least three of these arctic specimens.

Marcotegi explains that the birds’ usual habitat is tundra –-a polar region of low vegetation– and that he does not believe that they will last very long in in Spain, no matter how harsh this coming winter may be.

Another biologist, Nicolás López, head of species conservation at BirdLife, explains that the southernmost latitudes that snowy owls can frequent “never goes beyond the north of the United Kingdom or Scandinavia”.

It is unprecedented to find them this far south.

The theories of how the birds actually got to Spain are numerous. Among the scenarios is that the birds, not being the best migrators, took rest on a boat which wound-up taking them to Asturias. Another theory among experts, and as reported by plainsmenpost.com, is that, yes, you guessed it, that big bad wolf “climate change” is to blame. López says that global warming may gave caused the “extreme phenomena of more iciness in their areas” meaning the birds traveled south to find food.

I’m starting to think that whenever a phenomena occurs in nature that ‘experts’ don’t quite understand, ‘climate change’ is the go-to. The scapegoat. If the theory wasn’t so pervasive and destructive, it would actually be quite funny.

Enjoy your weekend.

Stay free.

The COLD TIMES are returning, the mid-latitudes are REFREEZING, in line with the great conjunction, historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow (among other forcings).

Both NOAA and NASA appear to agree, if you read between the lines, with NOAA saying we’re entering a ‘full-blown’ Grand Solar Minimum in the late-2020s, and NASA seeing this upcoming solar cycle (25) as “the weakest of the past 200 years”, with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.

Furthermore, we can’t ignore the slew of new scientific papers stating the immense impact The Beaufort Gyre could have on the Gulf Stream, and therefore the climate overall.

  1. Cap,

I like your use of ‘experts’.

This may be cliche and old:

An ex~spurt is a “has been drip under pressure.” Fits MSM-spurts well.

    Your narrative is excellent.

  2. Julian

This is good news indeed. How many will hear of it though? The information war rages on.

Its been a cool spring and early summer in South Africa, with one exceedingly hot day in October which “burnt” the new leaves of certain plants in our garden (Durban.) I have a thermometer and the temperature got to 41 deg and stayed at that for 4 hours. I have not experienced leaves wilting and dying nor have elderly avid gardeners that have lived here their whole lives. Record cold temperatures were experienced in the southen/southwestern Drakensberg in July as reported here.

I notice that the Antarctic ice extent is down currently though, and the troposphere average up slightly though. More extremes! Last winter was fantastic for surfing here and this one equivalently terrible!

  3. Andrew Stone

Being an AGW skeptic, I do need to play devil’s advocate here and present evidence of rising sea levels: https://www.treehugger.com/island-nations-threatened-by-climate-change-4869275.
Despite the source, the fact remains that south sea islanders are losing real estate to rising sea levels. They are actively looking for places to relocate to.
Accepting this as reality, my question is; will these sea level issues reverse now that the Earth is cooling down? Are we looking at near future real estate gold mines?

    1. Harry Davidson

More fool you for accepting anything from treehugger. Tuvalu is increasing size not shrinking, and the expansion of 2.1% this year is expected to accelerate next year.

I haven’t checked the other 13 places they quote. I have limited energy for climate change whack-a-mole. There is such a torrent of lies that you can never refute them all, so one proof of “they’re lying” per document is enough.

      1. Deb

I like your bon mot-“climate change whack-a-mole”. Very descriptive.

          I nicked it from wattsupwiththat.

          1. Deb

            At least you’re honest, lol.

i think id relocate if i lived in those places..it would only take a small tsunami to drown them and with seismic activity increasing due to the grand solar minimum next few decades looks more than likely..however sea levels will contract as the oceans become colder

      1. Ray

“…[the sea] will contract as the oceans become colder.”

        Actually, that will not happen.

Water has unique properties. One of them is that it has a density maximum at 4 Centigrade and expands if the temperature drops further towards the freezing point 0 C. In the case of salty sea water the range is moved down, from 0 to 4 C, to -2 to 2 C. Most of the ocean is at a sort of ‘sweet spot’ so that a degree less or a degree more will have almost no effect on volume.

There is a theory that recent observations of sea level rises in tropical places are misleading, as all that is happening is redistribution of the global ocean water in response to slight variations in the earth’s spin. There is necessarily a bulge at the equator when the spin increases. These variations are cyclical.

So much for the global warming hoax.

When the sea reaches the doorstep of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, I will start to be concerned.

  6. Martin P Kunstmann

You (Andrew Stone) talk about sea leave rise. What do we know about island subsidence?? The result would give the same picture.

    1. Ray

In Geology, the terms ‘sea-transgression’ and ‘sea-regression’ are regarded as more neutral than sea ‘rise’ and ‘fall’ precisely because the evidence in the rocks is often not definite as to the cause of a sequence of depositional layers. These sequences are – literally – numbered in the thousands around the world, and present themselves from all geological periods. So incredibly COMMON is this phenomenon!

I once took a formal course on the geology of sea-level changes. It was quite intricate and rather boring. The sea comes in, the sea goes out, the sea comes in…

But the study gave a real perspective. We little creatures who hover around on the edge of the water cry when our sand-castles are washed away. More fools us.

  7. Mr Reynard

OMG !! In the picture on top of the White Bear is very distressing to see ?? Poor White Bear is close to drowning, because of Global Warming melting the Polar Ice ?? I’m appalled , I’m horrified ? I’m outraged that little Greta isn’t doing nothing to save that poor White Bear from drowning ?? She should be sailing there in her solar powered yacht to save that Withe Bear ..

    1. Julian Wilson

You’re doing that which you deride the AGW propagandists for. You’re reporting one side of the picture! You report on cold events and they report on warm events. You could say that’s providing balance but I’d call it disingenuous! I’m only interested in the truth. I visit your site a lot and in very grateful for all the interesting, informative and well written reporting of yours, but when you fail to post a comment of mine that calls you out for looking at ice gains one pole whilst ignoring the losses on the other, it raises doubt!

  9. Andrew Stone

    Well OK.
    Apparently, I stand corrected. 😉
    As I said “Devil’s advocate”.
Harry, I was hoping someone would take the bait and prove me wrong. I read somewhere recently (probably bookmarked it) about one of the island government officials despairing about the rising sea water level gradually moving inland and how they are trying to find other places to live because of that. He seemed to be sincerely reporting an objective fact from his point of view. That was his actual experience, based on his words. I’m inclined to believe he is reporting what he is seeing and experiencing. On the other hand, my cousin living within a few hundred feet of Florida shoreline reports absolutely no such thing (rising sea level) at that location having lived at the same address for over 30 years.
I, like most of you here, I suspect, simply want the truth, good or bad.
Harry, I would like to see your sources for the receding island sea level reports. Not doubting you at all. Would just like to read it.
… Martin, I think you may be on to something there about subsidence. Floating on a molten interior, the Earth’s crust does rise and fall in some locations due to events in other locations (increasing weight of ice for example).
    Thanks for the intelligent conversation.

    1. Matt Dalby

If a government official from one of the island nations reports sea water moving inland there are a couple of possible explanations.
He/she is lying in the hope of getting large sums of money from those countries “responsible” for climate change. Possible given that as part of the Paris climate deal developed nations pledged $100billion to help poorer countries adapt (although a lot of the money has so far not been given).
Increased population/tourism/development means they’re extracting ground water faster than rainfall can replenish the underground reserviors, and as the fresh water table drops this allows sea water to enter the porous coral that the island sits on.

    2. Atom man

Yes, we are o.6 mi or 1 km from the Atlantic and I have seen no “sea level rise” down here in 20+ years. I too think we may be heading into another Little Ice Age which is very bad news as growing seasons will be shortened and growing regions will be pushed South, that with 7.5 (?) billion (!) mouths to feed. If there really is a depopulation agenda at work in the current “plague”, maybe it it b/c “they” know something like this that “they” don’t want to tell the “sheeple”?

      1. Andrew Stone

Looks like most of the farmland purchased by Bill Gates is located in the warmer portions of the US. Why did he not buy farmland nearer the Canadian border if he believes in AGW?

  10. Martin Siebert

For everything…everything we talk about experts, but experts who cannot be challenged or questioned. Science must be openly debated, not imposed.
Here every year the media reports on AGW, (The hottest year ever!) at least in early Spring, but so far they are silent.
My fear is in the common people, they are blind, or just need to survive, but all is expensive! Everyone expects an easy, fast and convenient solution.
The population soon will decrease, dominated by the cold… let’s see how many casualties we have in the coming years.
Will the’green’ energy really save you from this bogeyman!?
Even with 5…7 days of sunshine per month in the last month of Spring?

  11. wvweights

You do know it rains on land…..right……Well when it does some of that land is washed away and starts its march to the sea. Finally it gets to the ocean and does something un heard of…..it starts to sink to the bottom and replaces water as it sinks. Just may be some of this so called rise is due to the amount of land/soil/rocks going into the ocean and displacing water? There is my 2 cents worth.

  12. Buddy

“Not by their words but by their deeds shall they be judged”. So we learned from Al Gore and B. Obama that we are doomed due to climate warming and rising sea levels. Let’s check the facts…
Al Gore got mega rich and has huge mansions in Tennessee costing U$7000.00 in monthly heating & electricity bills.
Obama got mega rich and bought a huge mansion in Martha’s vineyard right next to the beach. Now he bought a huge mansion in Oahu, Hawaii (the P.I. Magnum movie estate) which is directly at the beach and on sea level. So we mere humans have to follow their rules, while they themselves are above rules. Yeah, right!

  13. Tom Northcott

I notice from your charts that the Antarctic is losing ice As the Arctic is gaining. Just coincidence?

The lockdown [isolation] of the prepared unvaxxed remnants and the “returned privileges” for the vaxxed [shedding] oblivious wanting to attend large crowds, venues, airports “to be able to travel” and take their “boosters” are well within in the rancher’s plans… and maintaining a low profile while the globalist’s eugenical weapons work their magic has also been “our” plan. The ranchers only seem like psychopaths to the cattle who don’t get eugenics and dark extended “winters”. I’m starting to think that whenever a phenomena occurs in nature that ‘experts’ don’t quite understand, ‘climate change’ is the go-to.

This is why climate science is a pseudo-scientific religion: there is no way to falsify the hypothesis (meaning whatever the event, it’s indicative of climate change.) Thus, because it can’t be disproved, it’s seen as “consensus” despite violating a basic principle of the scientific method: the ability to test and falsify the hypothesis, AKA Popper’s Law of Falsifiability.

  20. Ray

“…whatever the event, it’s indicative of climate change.”

But logically it can not be so – and therefore it is not.

The obvious fact, that many people who should know better use absurd ad hoc explanations to soothe the pain of their cognitive dissonance, need not weigh with us.

Of course, ‘they’ are still in absolute control of the narrative. Nothing to be done about that, unfortunately.

  21. Andrew Stone

So frustrating trying to help someone understand that they are being lied to. Can’t win these arguments with logic and facts because the herd will have none of it. They would rather “believe” the world is becoming an oven. Why do I (and other readers here) care? For one thing we see the fatalistic attitude in these believers causing them to give up all hope for the future. (Not to mention the vast sums of money coming out of the peasants pockets to service the rich and powerful.
