All-Time Record Cold Invades Eastern Russia, while Moscow just suffered its Cloudiest-Ever January

Temperature anomalies at least 10C below the seasonal average invaded the Chukotka and Kamchatka regions of eastern Russia last week.

In Nachiki, Kamchatka on Feb. 4, an all-time bone-chilling low of -43.4C (-46.1F) was registered which busted the previous record of -42.7C (-44.9F) held since 1973 (approaching solar minimum of cycle 19).

According to hmn.ru, “severe blizzards” and “sharp gusty winds” accompanied the brutal cold, with the Arctic conditions forecast to last for “some more time.”

On Feb. 6, the mercury in Chukotka plunged to as low as -50C (-58F) and beyond.

While in Kamchatka (known for its active volcanoes), readings of -40C (-40F) and below were observed.

Cloudy Moscow

Also reported by hmn.ru is the news that Moscow just suffered its gloomiest January on record.

Barely 11 hours of sunshine was measured during the entire 31 day stretch, thanks to thick and persistent clouds darkening the skies of the Russian capital — 11 hours comfortably breaks the previous record for the city’s lowest amount of sunshine, the 13 hours held by January, 2004.
