Adelaide Wakes to its Coldest June Morning Since 1944 (Solar Minimum of Cycle 17)

2020 will likely go down as the year the next Grand Solar Minimum cycle began, as temperatures ACROSS the globe continue to take a serious and notable turn for the frigid.

If the Southern Hemisphere’s climate is a forerunner for what’s to come for its Northern counterpart, then oh golly — the NH should start preparing for what a historic winter of 2020/21; one including record snowfall, extended freezes, prolonged power-outages, and disruptions to the food supply.

Adelaide’s West Terrace Bureau of Meteorology station recorded a minimum overnight temperature of 0.9C (33.6F) at 5:21am on the morning of Wednesday, June 10 (despite the UHI effect, it must be pointed out).

That reading has entered the books as June’s lowest-minimum temperature since the 0.8C (33.4F) set back on June 24, 1944 (solar minimum of cycle 17).

“It was that cold,” reports Adelaide local Michael Swensson on Twitter, “the River Torrens’ surface froze”:

Another Adelaide local, Caralyn, stopped along the upper Torrens with her children to take a video.

“I’ve never seen the river freeze like that before,” said Caralyn.

“It’s amazing.”

Adelaide’s coldest June temperature on record “officially” remains the 0.6C (33.1F) from June 24, 1908 (the Centennial Minimum). However, the city’s former primary thermometer station –located in Kent Town– actually broke that record this morning.

In addition, record-lows were also set up and down the state.

The temperature at Parafield Airport in Adelaide’s northern suburbs dipped to -2.4C (27.7F) — the location’s lowest minimum since records began.

A June-chill of -2.2C (28F) was observed in Kadina, Keith and all.

While across the South East, a myriad of bone-chilling lows were logged, including Yunta recording SA’s coldest minimum temperature of the morning — a freezing -4.4C (24F).

Subzero temperatures over the past few days have inflicted serious damage on the state’s citrus crops.

Grower Peter Walker has been desperately applying molasses to his trees, as well as watering the canopy, to prevent further frost damage.

“It’s like a burn,” said Walker.

“It ruptures the sap in the young shoots and they look like they’ve been burnt.”

The COLD TIMES are returning in line with historically low solar activitycloud-nucleating Cosmic Rays, and a meridional jet stream flow.

Even NASA agrees, if you read between the lines, with their forecast for this upcoming solar cycle (25) seeing it as “the weakest of the past 200 years,” with the agency correlating previous solar shutdowns to prolonged periods of global cooling here.
